"social infrastructure" aRTIFACT
Same site - different brief. Commissioned by the Chesterfield Borough Council, aRTIFACT is a multi-purpose community centre with an archaeology library, senior citizen space, offices, cafeteria and central courtyard. The scheme addresses Chesterfield's historical narrative as a 'gateway' into the 'Peak District' as well as the local demands for areas that cater to an aging population.
Visually inspired by the tectonics of the various different rock types that make up the Peak district ( using materials such as rammed earth ), aRTIFACT celebrates the idea of transistion and enclosure - like Chesterfield's title as a 'gateway', the centre represents a visual and sensual break in the urban fabric, focusing on the shift in the atmosphere created inside. The form and layout of this scheme principally operates around the cloister at the center of the site - an aspect reminiscent of the area's past life as a courtyard for an adjacent Sunday School and Chapel.
