"life's a beach"
A three week long group-led project closing the first year, this brief focused on the importance of construction techniques, time-management and local environmental / urban analysis. Located and constructed during a slot of roughly five hours at an area of the 'Cleethorpes Central Promenade Beach' vulnerable to high tide, this project was a true test of teamwork against unpredictable weather changes and limited construction time.
Prior to the date of construction, preparation and development for the design of the 'weather-shielding tent' and 'sandcastle' were established on the local urban geometry / design principles and notable attractions, with strategic and environmentally conscious design taking place and dictating the final form afterwards. Relevant features framing the core of the design journey throughout the project include the local maze, promenade tile geometry and playgrounds.
Through clay massing and continuous testing of the scale of these elements in displaying the ideal form of hierarchy, we eventually arrived at a final form for the sandcastle - which with the preparation of different moulds and templates before construction day, would be achievable to construct within the given time frame. As for the tent, it's lightweight timber frame connected with rivets, cable ties and a weather-proof fabric meant it could easily be disassembled, transported and assembled for it's showcase.
