Two musicians and their respective partners in architecture journalism begin to recognise a national 'cost of living' increase. They are both seeking a joint 'co-living' solution in a newly built home that not only blends sympathetically to it's immediate environment, but leverages it sustainably to reduce maintenance costs. The brief for this project outlined the client's desire in allocating space for their work and for their comfort, as post COVID-19 arrangements have brought them indoors.
To achieve this versatile environment in creating a distinct division between the sound, privacy and scale of their spaces, this project was strongly established on the principles of a detailed site analysis involving flood risks, solar activity, etc; however, special attention was given to the noise pollution on / near site, as half of the clients have vastly different sound requirements to their other halves. The sound analysis gave consideration to not only which areas gave the highest decibel readings, but also to which of these sounds were objectively 'appealing' in influencing lower blood pressure levels and drawing a 'clearer' mental state.
Arranged by its local solar, sound and flood risk analysis, the proposal features two highly distinct forms. Initially a visual indicator of the division of spaces in their sound and privacy requirements, the western end of the proposal houses the private functions of the clients; the form inspired by an idea to 'de-construct' and 're-arrange' the typical British terraced house. The eastern end of the proposal borrows it's form from an aspect highly relevant to it's function - using decibel readings and sound wave data collected from site, the form of the music studio and art gallery borrow from the average wavelength of sound on site as well as the physical contours and geometry of the slope at the adjacent river bank.
